One point which might be brought out in the reply to this letter from Mr.Crombie is that liberal financial assistance towards the establish- ment of the Hong Kong University would certainly be regarded in Hong Kong and China as convincing though indirect evidence of H.M.G.'s intention to maintain their
position in the Colony for at least some considerable time to
come.
That point has
been made in discussion at least here before, and Dr. Selwyn Clarke pressed it strongly in a talk with me yesterday.
